Pit Bull Requires Multiple Surgeries

This is so sad. I hope this dog gets well quickly and he finds his forever home. I can't believe how skinny this dog was-- that dog was truly emaciated!

MANCHESTER A two-year-old pit bull found on Langdon Street on Dec. 27, severely emaciated, covered in sores with exposed bone and suffering from urine scalding, is recovering slowly.
"He's holding his own," said Manchester Animal Shelter manager Shelley Greenglass. She described the dog's condition as "absolutely the worst I've ever seen."
The dog, who has been named Tonka, is being treated at the Veterinary Emergency Center of Manchester, where he has already undergone two surgeries and has at least two more to go.
Tonka weighed just 29 pounds, about 30 pounds less than he should, when he was rescued. Residents in the area of Langdon Street had reported seeing him.
Manchester Animal Control Officer Neal Vogler said Tonka's condition was the worst case of animal neglect and cruelty he's seen .
Greenglass said the condition of the dog when found, including injuries that forced the amputation of the tip of his tail due to loss of blood flow, indicated he had been confined in a small crate.

At the same time, said Greenglass, he's very friendly.
"He's a love bug," she said.
Vogler is asking for the public's help in identifying the owner or owners of Tonka. Anyone with information can contact him by leaving a message at 628-6043, or can leave information with the shelter at 628-3544.
Greenglass said the Manchester Animal Shelter has established a "Tonka Medical Fund" to help cover Tonka's medical bills, which are nearing $2,000. She said any money donated to the fund either online or by mail will go toward Tonka's medical expenses.
She said pit bulls continue to be Manchester's most abandoned and neglected animals. In 2010, the shelter took in 357 dogs, more than half of them pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The shelter has a Fix-a-Pit Program that offers free spay or neuter services for any pit bull owned by a Manchester resident.
Greenglass said after Tonka has fully recovered, he will be carefully placed for adoption.
The shelter, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, provides critical medical care, food, shelter and comfort to the stray and homeless animals of Manchester. Every dog and cat that comes through the shelter is inoculated against common diseases and spayed or neutered before being placed in adoptive homes.
