Dog Park Bully

Hello all! I'm new here. I adopted my first pitbull mix, Koda, about a month ago. She's a fantastic dog and gets along great with my black lab mix. We have seen no aggression issues with her, but she is a bit of a bully at the dog park. She has only done it a couple of times thus far, but I'd love to stop it before it becomes a problem. She will pick a specific dog and will not leave them alone. She will chase them, bark at them, and pester them. The other dogs do not enjoy the attention and I worry that it will end in a fight one day.

Koda's background: She's almost a year old. We were told that her previous family gave her up due to expecting a second child and not having time for a high energy dog. She's about 50 pounds. The only time she has issues is at the dog park. She has no aggression issues on the leash or when we have play dates with other dogs at our friend's houses.

Any information or help that you can give would be great!

Stop taking her to the dog parks, viola! Problem solved. In my opinion dog parks and bull breeds are a recipe for disaster. Both because of the danger of dog fights (as the saying goes: a pit bull may not start the fight, but they will finish it) and also contagious diseases in general.

You have the right idea with the individual "play dates". At least in that scenario you know the other owners and have a marginal amount more control than in a dog park.

Agree with Carriana! Definitely no more dog parks. Ad some of the "stickies" that we have here --there is one about Dog parks that I hope you will read

Oh and welcome to the forum!

Not only do dog parks have the potential for disease and what not to be spread, as well as who knows what kind of owners have their dogs there but you are basically letting your dog have a free for all with every other dog that's there. Dog parks are designed to work with well socialized, extremely tired dogs. MOST owners go their to exercise their dogs, not AFTER they have been worked and are tired. So you have a combo of HUGE energy everyone being in "charge". Stop going to a dog park and your issue is fixed.

I have known someone who was at the dog park, a fight broke out no where near their dog, cops were called and when they showed up her dog was taken for quarantined because it looked like it might be a "pit bull" and the cop did not believe everyone saying the dog was not the problem dog. It had NOTHING to do with the incident they were called for, for the safety of your dog, please stop going to dog parks.

Dog parks are always an issue. If you had an issue at the dog park why did you keep going back? You dont want it to turn into a fight but you keep putting your dog in a situation where it potentially could fight....

Like everyone said just stay away. No matter what you and your dog WILL ALWAYS get blamed. Even friends of mine who I know and trust, I won't let my dog play with theirs. As a small puppy it was different but my boy plays HARD. I rather would not have to worry if my friends think my dog is playing too rough. Even when it is CLEAR the dogs are playing some people just get too nervous around a "pit bull".

My boy is allowed to play with TWO dogs only and who knows if over time that will change. He's still young. The reason why he's allowed to play with those two dogs is bc they also play rough and those friends aren't gonna look at me crazy bc their dogs play just as hard if not harder.

got to agree with everyone,

the thing that would worry me the most is getting fleas,

and i've heard 'parvo' can live for a long time in the dirt.

There is a great stickie on here about things to avoid with these dogs. It's title is something about thing you will need to give up with these dogs.

Please try find it and read it. (I don't know how to link a thread or else I would. Maybe someone else can help with that)

These are dogs are incredible, but they are not social butterflies who can be left to make there own decisions about situations with other animals. Please me a responsible dog owner and make those decisions for both of your dogs.
