Dog Park Issues

I found a pit bull on the freeway 2 years ago. The vet says he's ~3 years old now. He is neutered. I have one other dog that is older and smaller (she looks most like a beagle). At first the new pit chased the older beagle around and there were some issues, but they get along now. The older dog seems to be the boss. I have been hesitant to take him to the dog park because he is very excitable around other dogs. We moved to a new area with a really nice dog park, so I decided to try it out. We went a few times and my dog was being mounted by other dogs at the park. He has a crazy amount of energy and runs around the dog park almost running into people. He will play with the dogs in the park for a while, then he stand at the entrance and acts a crazy and excited to play with the dogs outside the dog park. Today he tried to mount a smaller dog and kind of got into a fight. I'm not sure how to interpret the behavior. My dog tried to mount a smaller dog. The smaller dog was not to happy, bit my dog in the face (no blood drawn). My dog bit the smaller dogs jowl and would not let go. He did not bit hard enough to draw blood and he did not shake his head (e.g. no attempt to maul the smaller dog). Somehow the smaller dog was able to continue biting my dog in the face. I was holding both of them up trying to break them apart. In the meantime, some lady (not the smaller dogs owner) comes over and pepper sprays my dog (and me since I'm holding both dogs). He finally let go and we left. I went back to ensure the smaller dog was not injured. He was not, no blood drawn. Me and my dog were pepper sprayed but no serious injuries. Does this mean my dog is aggressive? He's never been mean to people or dogs and I don't get the feeling he was really trying to hurt the smaller dog. Does this mean my dog should not go to the dog park?

Dog parks are not a good idea for any breed especially bull breeds because they tend to be the ones blamed for issues, even if they aren't the cause. There's also other things to consider like desiese. I'd just play it safe and stay away from DP's.

Yeah, I agree with the last post. You will want to avoid dog parks.
Here is a good read to sum it up for you.

I wouldn't say this is aggression, yet. Rather, its determination to not be bullied (no pun intended) and to let other dogs know where he stands. However, this could have been the incident that will turn on the aggression towards other dogs. It's hard to say how he'll react in the future, so to be safe, I would no longer take him to the dog park, or anywhere where he'll be able to play with other strange dogs. It's best to arrange smaller play dates with people you know and their dogs, so that there's less chance of an incident arising.

I suggest reading the links that were posted and take heed. You have a big responsibility now, to be proactive and raise and manage your dog to be the best representative of the breed he can be.

you shouldnt take your dog to a dog park, thats one of the first things i read in a sticky when i got here. when i get mine im taking mine to a baseball field thats empty shutting the gates and letting him run. that way he still gets exercised just not around other dogs where a incident could happen.

i agree that dog parks are no bueno. Almost every person i've encountered at a dog park is there so their dog can get exercise, if they don't give their dog exercise then odds are they don't take the time to train their dog either. Which means you're dealing with a ton of untrained dogs and irresponsible dog owners. I've never had a pleasant experience and if you have a puppy and working on socializing, the last thing you want is your puppy to have a bad experience and it effect their training. You're much better off having play dates with dogs of people you know. But keep in mind, your pit doesn't "need" dog friends to play with.

Dog Park Issues

Yeah look for owners and dogs you know and trust. Sounds like your dog had rude behavior. I mean going around mounting dogs is a recipe for disaster when he comes across a dog who doesn't want to be mounted like today. Glad it ended so well. I carry pepper spray for off leash dogs. Sorry you got it as well but glad it worked. Your dog might not necessarily be aggressive to every dog but it seems like he didn't want to be corrected and called out on his rude dog behavior. Totally normal for some dogs to not want corrections which is why it's important to know he dogs you bring yours around.

Look into getting and carrying a breakstick or parting tool and how to use it properly. But your best bet is baseball or tennis and basketball courts where you control the environment. Most people take they dogs to a dog park for exercise when a dog should be properly exercised BEFORE the amount of stimulation dog parks create. Tons of stickies on this as well as the ones already shared.

Thank you for the information. We obviously need to work harder on training and find other places to get fresh air. I really liked the dog park because he could run as fast as he wanted and he was so happy. Perhaps we can find a baseball field, that is a great idea.

Thanks again...

Baseball fields, soccer fields, hell someone with some land may be willing to help you by letting you and your dog run around a few hours once a week.
