Urgent! Need advice asap!

My boyfriend and I rescued a 2 Yr old male pit a little ove a year ago. Everything has been great until recently. He has been snapping at people that come over and then all of the sudden he growls at me, his owner, and two days later snapped at me just for holding him by the collar while my mom came in and walked him outside. I let go of the collar and he turns and almost got my hand. I could hear his teeth hit together. It scared me tremendously. I don't know what has gotten into him lately but it is really starting to worry me. We have children in the home. He has become very territorial over the yard. I have to walk to the gate and hold him while friends come in. Please give me some advice/opinions, anything. Please. He is a very big dog and I'm getting nervous when I'm home alone with him.

First off I would recommend a vet visit to ensure that there is nothing medically wrong that could cause the change in temperament. If all that checks out then I would seek out a dog trainer\behaviorist to evaluate him. If it turns our he is HA (Human Aggressive) put him down.

Hopefully it is something medically treatable or a behavior that a trainer can help you work through. If not then euthanasia is the only option, especially with children in the house.

This is my 2nd post but on the other one I we did have a guy from Milton k9 academy come do an aggression evaluation on him and he said he is not an aggressive dog but he does have some insecurities. But this was done months before the growling and snapping started. But you're right, he needs a vet check up just to see. We've actually made an appointment cuz he has been shaking his head a lot and scratching at his ears. We clean them but it still seems to bother him. So we decided to take him in. Maybe he is hurting and that's whats making him this way. I hope that's all it is. And I've also started training him hoping that will help also. He is so spoiled by my boyfriend so he does whatever he wants. But I cannot live in a house where I am afraid of my own dog. Hopefully his ears will be treated and with the training he will be a great dog! Thank you for the reply. This is my first ever pitbull and I need to know all I can. Hope we can get him on the right track! Thanks! ?

If the vet doesn't find anything medically wrong please get them to give you a referral to a vet behaviorist. Not "just" a trainer they will work with you to find a plan specifically for your dog. If you need help finding one in your area let me know where you are.

The sooner you intervene the better. No one should live in fear of what they are feeding. I'm sorry you are going through this.

I seen it before, he's so in love with your boyfriend, he feels you taking him away,
Start taking him with you, you spend quality time with him,
He'll figure out you are not taking his source of love, and food,

But if it can't be fixed, put him down, you don't want to witness the damage he can do......
Plus, there are so many 'good' ones out there...

I agree with the others on a vet check as a dog that starts showing aggression without cause is either ill, or there is a cause that is being missed. Go for health issues first then have him evaluated. If he is having a no medical aggression issue please consider putting him down.

No one wants to make those choices or consider these things but doing what is best for these animals is what matters. I have had to make that call on a dog I myself produced and raised, that just ended up not begin stable. It is a hard call, but you can not risk either yourself or others being attacked by your animal. This is the responsibility all animal owners take on.
