7 week old nipping

So, I got a pit pup as a present for my kids to follow tradition, and he's a great pup but he loves to play and has ridiculous lock jaw, what techniques can I use to stop the nipping, we don't want him getting one of the kids trying to play, thanks for the help!

To clarify NO breed of Dog has jaws that can lock. That is a myth. Dogs just do not want to open their mouth, they are not locked or unable to be opened. Interesting he was removed from his litter so soon, staying with the litter to at least 8 weeks helps teach the puppy bite inhibition by playing with his siblings and mother, getting the dog early like in your case can cause issues later in life. Is there a reason you got him so soon? Most states require the puppy to be at least 8 weeks before being separated, 10 weeks is ideal.

With that being said you need to work on the kids energy levels and the dogs and separate them when they get excited. They will feed off each other. When skin is contacted teeth all play needs to stop immediately. I would make a large OUCH high pitched squeal and then stop play. Re-engage and if teeth happen to contact me again, large noise all play stops. The dog must realize the teeth touching you makes play stop, so he learns what is and is not accepted. During the teething stage around 5-6 months I would shove a ball in my dogs mouth so he would munch on that and not whatever else he saw that might help his pain lol. Time and patience is needed. Just keep training your kids and you dog as best you can.

True. "Lock jaw" is a myth. Pitbulls are the third strongest bite in the canine world behind rotties then German shepherds. That being said, pits are very muscular and strong. Supervision when playing with children is a must. My two girls get very excited during play. Any unacceptable behaviour should result in play time over. The pup should learn quickly what keeps the play going and what stops it. My girls love play time even more than treats. I wish you many years of love and fun with your pit!

As people above said, no such thing as a lock jaw. When I play tug with my boy, he is ridiculously strong and won't let go. When he steals toilet paper or rocks and tries to chew them, it is nothing for me to pry his mouth open and get it out, even now at 8 mo. Also, puppies don't make good presents for kids, you will be the one doing all the cleaning and training, etc. He is 7 weeks old, he is not nipping, he is teething. I got mine at 12 weeks and I would make a noise, then leave the room. Took some time and patience, but he stopped (plus he grew out of teething stage). They also nip to get attention, so if you give them ANY attention, they learn that they get it by nipping. Or barking. Or doing anything else that would make you chase him or even talk to him.
