Francis Guarding House

Someone tried to open the front door to to my house today (I suspect kids playing around) and Francis ran to the door and barked and growled at whomever it was. Now he's on edge, barking at any noise he hears outside the door and he's been walking around the house looking suspicious at every thing that he hears now.

I do live in a fairly bad neighborhood and I'm somewhat glad he is doing this, he is a mix, mixed with Pit Bull and who knows what else since I read Pit Bulls don't guard so perhaps it's whatever mix he is that is prompting the guarding?

I'm wondering if I should discourage this behavior or should I welcome it since I live in a bad area? I don't want him to be human aggressive but since I live in bad neighborhood maybe the guarding would okay??

Thoughts? thanks.

My GSD is sooo territorial it's not even funny. You had best get my or my boyfriend to let you in or you are going to end up as his snack. I live in a bad area also, part of the reason I got a shepherd in the first place. How does he act when people come over? I had to teach Eko to sit in his spot while I let people in since it was only when they knocked and were coming in that he was aggressive. Once they are in they're fine. If Francis is aggressive to people even after you let them in I would crate him when you have guests for now and try to find a behaviorist

Edit: If you like that he is protective at the door I wouldn't worry about correcting that as long as he can turn it off when you let the person inside.

Regardless of the neighborhood you live in, it's completely up to you whether you praise or reprimand for the behavior. I wouldn't say Francis is guarding, but rather, alerting you to the noises and on-goings outside. Both my dogs will alert, but if it came down to it, my boy (black and tan dog in my signature) wouldn't let anyone in, and I would probably be looking at a lawsuit for a bite if they tried to come in uninvited.

As was previously stated, as long as your dog is able to be controlled upon letting a person in, then that's great. I don't have company at my house, so I don't worry about it with my dogs, as they know when I say it's okay, they can quit barking lol.

No he's fine with people once they are in and knows that I'm okay with it. Ok, good I will let him keep alerting me to the noises outside!

It's nice to have a dog around that does this, especially where I live.

Thank you

Sully will bark and growl when he hears noises outside which I think is great. His bark alone is enough to scare someone off. He stops when I tell him to though and he is usually wagging his tail so not sure if he would actually bite someone if they came in honestly. He has never showed any human aggression.

Cain and Sheba bark at noises around the house. And knocking on the door. They are very good at alerting me lol. I've never had an issue with guest though. They love people too much lol. I'm home alone a lot at night and it freaks me out and I think they pick up on that so the slightest out of place noise is picked up on. They check the windows often lol.

Ices barks at what she can't see, even if she knows the voice, but her bark is different when it's one of us versus one of the tenants downstairs or the kids' grandmother (who lives across the hall from us). I can actually distinguish between each of my dogs' barks, and whether it's an alert bark or an aggressive bark.

We had some tenants recently that even Ices didn't like (children included; they were just as pitiful as their parents were). I had her on the balcony one day, and out of nowhere I heard her growling and barking in a deep, threatening tone so i immediately went to the door to see what she was barking/growling at, and one of the boys were standing down on the sidewalk talking to her, and without seeing me standing there, turned around and told her to shut up! I made my presence known and told him don't ever tell my dog to shut up! She's letting me know someone's out here. She's even got a "Mom, I'm starving, hurry up with the food" bark, lol.

Roller's bark when he's wanting to play, versus his aggressive bark has a very noticeable difference in pitch/tone. His alert bark to another animal/dog is slightly higher pitched, but not playful, where his aggressive/guarding bark is very deep and "throaty" sounding, like it comes from his diaphragm and is very gruff; his playful bark is even higher pitched than when he sees an animal or another dog.

DM... Ices would do the same, as long as you rub her belly and give her some food lol.
