Just How Dangerous Are Pit Bulls?
So just how dangerous are pit bulls?

The American Temperament Testing Society evaluated 122 breeds and found that the American Staffordshire Terrier, a type of banned pit bull in Denver, passed 83.3 percent of the time, just behind the golden retriever (83.6 percent).

The American Canine Foundation calculated rates of human dog-bite fatalities by breed and found that pit bulls bite at a lower rate than many other dogs. A Doberman Pinscher bites 10 times as much as a pit bull, the foundation reported.

Still, pit bulls and rottweilers have caused the most deaths, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States, which examined 20 years of dog-bite data.

That same study concluded fatal attacks "represent a small proportion of dog bite injuries to humans, and therefore, should not be the primary factor driving public policy concerning dangerous dogs."

Julie Gilchrist, a CDC doctor who researches dog bites, said many factors go into biting risk, including the health of the dog and how the animal was raised.

A Denver district court ruled in 1990 pit bulls can be treated differently than other dogs because "there is credible evidence that pit bull dog attacks are more severe and more likely to result in fatalities."

Well this is how dangerous my little one is..... :o

Good one :) Everyone that owns a pit bull knows that they aren't dangerous. We just need to make eveyone else aware of it.

I'm the biggest advocate now for all dogs...I mean they're dogs, not blood hungry, man eating animals.

But I do fear that the "Lab/retriever" bread will be lumped into the aggression bread within the next decade. People put too much faith in this bread and don't feel the need to train them as much since they're so much "smarter" than other dogs and "more obidiant".

We all know it's the owners and how they go about training and loving their animals, they are animals after all and need guidance and affection. Not to be tied up outside hope for the best :(

in the chicago area, last week 6 people were attacked by 3 pit bulls and they were all shot by police. 5 pit bulls were released on police while trying to break up a fight and they were shot too. 9 days of pitbulls on the news .
it is hard to convince people that they are not dangerous.

That's sad...
That's too bad it had to happen like that! The people that let those other 5 dogs loose should be sent to jail (or in my opinion paying with their life). But that's another example of people that have no sense and mistreat their dogs. Now you see what happens to the dogs - they end up paying the ultimate price! :( But, I do hope that the people that got attacked ended up ok...

Best Friends!
They truely do enjoy eachother! I'm so glad they will grow together! Although my daughter has started with the "Meg is mine and you need your own dog". So we may get another one next year. (Nevermind the fact that she just weaseled her way to get a kitten, and believe it or not meg wants nothing more than to lick her all over but the kitten really doesnt like meg!! Its never a dull moment in this house!)

It's funny huh? I wish when I walked my dogs that people wouldn't run to the other side of the road. Or just make it so obvious...it's not funny LOL, but it is a site to see people scatter cause 3 -4 month old pits are walking down the road. I have those extensions so I can hook 3 on 1 leash. Some people stop and tell me how beautiful they are, I had one guy try to run over me and my oldest one when we were jogging one time. I have found pits wondering the streets, and people will see a sign I posted or see the dog before me and come knock on my door,"Did you lose one of your dogs, I just wanted to let you know I saw a pit running around"....I'm shocked they didn't call the pound. I know I have changed SOME peoples opinion about pitbulls, but some are just set in their ways. I'll just try harder :D
