A rescued pit bull who lives with her family in West Roxbury has been declared a hero by the MSPCA-Angell after she helped to save the life of her owner last month.
Sweet Dee, a 6-year-old pit bull who was adopted five years ago, jumped into action in the beginning of May after discovering her owner, Elliot Nerland, on the couch, unresponsive and in cardiac arrest.
The dog raced to the couple's bedroom and barked incessantly. She woke Nerland's wife, Erin Daly, who then called 911 and began administering CPR.
Nerland was rushed to the hospital, where he spent several days in a medically-induced coma.
“It's just astounding how Sweet Dee knew that something was very wrong and that it was clear to her that I wasn't sleeping,” Nerland said. “She's a beloved member of our family but I never realized just how deep our bond is.”
Dr. Terri Bright of the MSPCA said she was not surprised by Sweet Dee's quick actions.
“I think Sweet Dee knew something was horribly wrong and that she should sound the alarm, and she did so without fear of punishment for barking loudly,” Bright said.
Nerland is now recovering at home.
“If anything, this whole situation has brought us that much closer,” he said. “I feel like the luckiest guy in the world.”
