MARIETTA, Ga. -- A pit bull attacked a 7-year-old girl Tuesday afternoon inside the Valley View Mobile Home Park in Marietta.
A neighbor saw the girl being bitten and stepped in to save her.
“It was horrible, I've never seen anything like that in my life. The book bag and her boot were over here but by the time we pulled up she was over there, screaming for help,” said Errol Jones.
Jones immediately sprung into action.
“I didn't know what else to do but chase him away with a stick. I hit him two times, he left, he tried to charge at me,” said Jones.
His sister took the girl to the hospital, with her leg badly injured.
The dog belongs to a family a few trailers away from Jones. Eduardo Velazquez said his sister-in-law found the pit bull about three months ago and kept him as a pet. He said the dog is kept on a chain, with a lock.
“We don't know exactly what happened,” said Velazquez.
CBS Atlanta’s Jennifer Mayerle asked Velazquez if he feels at all responsible for what happened.
“Well, like I say, it's not my dog, but we live right here and I think yes, we are responsible,” said Velazquez.
The pit bull will be euthanized and tested for rabies. Police told CBS Atlanta doctors originally thought the girl's injury was so serious that she would lose her leg, but they now believe they can repair the damage. Police say without Jones' help, things may be much different.
“I’m just glad I was here and God bless that little girl,” said Jones.
There are two separate investigations in the case. Police plan to charge the dog's owners with getting loose, and depending on the seriousness of the girl's injuries, they could also be charged criminally. Police also investigating if any adults could be charged because police said the girl was alone when the attack happened

CONYERS, Ga. -- A 5-day-old baby girl died Tuesday after being attacked by the family's pit bull dog, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.
The infant's mother found the dog on top of the baby's bassinet on Thursday morning about 8:45 a.m. after hearing the baby crying.
"As she approached the bassinet, she realized that the dog had bitten her daughter," said Sgt. Jodi Shupe of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office in a release e-mailed to Channel 2 Action News.
The parents took the baby to Rockdale Medical Center where she was airlifted to Children's HealthCare of Atlanta at Egleston. Surgery was performed on the infant and she was listed in critical condition. She died Tuesday as a result of her injuries.
No charges are expected to be filed.
The Sheriff's Office did not release the name of the family.

That is really sad! This goes to show how irresponsible people are. Why wasn't the dog contained in the first story and where in the heck where the parents? The second story, WTF? where was the mother you never leave a dog alone with a baby!!
The third story said it is not know what breed of dog it was but ASSUMED a pit bull.

Pit bulls

In the third story it said that one of the dogs got away but they caught the other dog and they think it's a pitbull. They never do dna tests on these dogs though. I hope they don't try to ban pitbulls. I like pitbulls a lot. The breed isn't for careless individuals.

Hey bJb
The stories are true-and very sad.Hate to hear about anybody get bit,and most when it's kid's.I hope the girl makes a full recovery.
The chain was a joke for one.And I did not see any fence around the area at all.The owners was doing a good deed by taking care of the dog,but had no idear about keeping it from getting loose.Killing the dog wont do any good,it's people that need to be trained when caring for a powerfull dog-no matter what the breed.
Thank you,
Henry

you can't dna test a pitbull, there is no DNA panel for American Pitbull terrier and those diagnostic tests are extremely innacurate. the closest thing to a APBT DNA panel they have is the AMstaff and god knows where they got their sample from.

thats really so sad i dont understand people, dogs are of a pack mentality and when you bring something new in they tend to be guarded and standoffish that includes a child so young its new- its different-its loud-its stealing you away from it- hence hostility and jealousy, i have a friend whos
saint bernard got standoffish with the new baby to the point of putting its mouth around the babys head, they asked a dog trainer about it-
the dog was threatening the baby " sayinging i can kill you with no problem now leave" as pack animals they do that....
they had the dog put down which is sad but they couldnt risk the kid or any other child at that point.

So so sad. I can't believe the way that people handle their animals. For one, that first dog was clearly not properly contained. The second story is tragic. I do not care how much you trust your dog, never leave them alone with a baby. The possible consequences make it a risk not worth taking.

As for the last story..."the dogs were likely pit bulls". Wait, you mean the media is reporting a "pit bull attack" without even knowing the breed of the dog!? What else is new?

As difficult as it is to put a dog to sleep, especially when the situation could have been avoided, I have to disagree with this post. A temperament correct pit bull does not break it's chain to bite a child. Allowing this dog to live only allows a second chance for the obviously unstable dog to bite someone else. That is a chance that the breed can not afford to take.
