Did i mess up raw?! My puppy is so sick

Hello all. So long story short i was reading a lot about the raw diet and swapped my 5 month old blue pitbull on it. He eats twice a day. The meals consist of cut up chicken breast and brown rice and some broccoli. He was eating blue wilderness for puppies with life source bits. When i had switched him over (4days ago) he was fine and was using the bathroom normally with no problems. 2 days goes by and he begins his diarrhea spout, this is going on now about 2 days. Im worried for him and am considering taking him to the vet. However his demeanor isn't bad at all hes still very playful with energy. The thing is also though hes starting to look drawn and skinny and its worrying me. Please help should i switch him back immediately? Take him to the vet? He's had all his shots btw.

It could be that you dog is detoxing from the kibble. From my understanding they will go through that. If you are following the prey model raw diet I'm not sure rice and grains are a part if it. Hopefully someone with more knowledge chimes in. Pookie has a lot of experience with feeding raw.

Cut up chicken breast, brown rice and broccoli is not a proper raw diet for an adult dog, let alone a fast growing puppy. The first thing you need to do is get rid of the diarrhea. Boil the chicken breast and feed that along with the brown rice until his stool returns to normal. You can also give a spoonful of pure pumpkin in the can (not pumpkin pie filling) with his meals. If it is not resolved within 24 hrs then he may need to see a vet. It could be a bacterial infection or parasites etc.. When his stool is back to normal you can try again with a raw diet but you really need to research raw diets before feeding anything to your pup. Here's a good site to start your research: BARF: A Bones and Raw Food Diet for Dogs - A Bones & Raw Food Guide for Dogs

Ok ok you are doing everything wrong! And please read the Prey Model Raw diet website!

Dogs who are raw fee need BONE!! To keep their poop firm. Do not boil the chicken, don't give rice, and don't give broccoli! And Dont give cooked bones. You are just asking for the runs.

Put him back on the kibble until you read the Prey Model Raw website and have everything in order and follow exactly what they say. Here is the site: PMR Articles - articles - Prey Model Raw
The person above gave your the site for the BARF diet, there is a big difference in feeding the PMR diet and the BARF diet. You need to read up on both and decide which to do. Both need to be done correctly. Rice and other grains are not digestible for dogs and many blue dogs are allergic to grains, like rice.

You need to give him just chicken backs/ leg quarters for 3-4 weeks straight. Perhaps a leg quarter in the morning and a chicken back and a chicken leg for dinner. That is all! For 3-4 weeks.

Once he has been good with that for 3-4 weeks, then you can start giving him organ meat, which is lung, kidney, liver. You can give it to him in just one of his meals, just a little bit at a time. Like around a 2 inch long piece of organ.

But please, just put the pup back on kibble until you really read that site. Raw is great for dogs but it needs to be done RIGHT!

Excellent advise. You covered what I was going to say. :)

The pmr site will cover it but you will ultimately be feeding 2-3% of your digs adult weight. I have read that you should feed pups 10% of the body weight until they reach 30lbs (I think that was the weigh. I went off my boys adult weight guestimate, and started him at 4 months, so not 100% sure)

Edit: i read that pmr intro about 20 times before switching my boy.

we are what we do repeatedly. excellence is then not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle

People told me to give my dog rice and chicken when he had a bad belly but he is allergic to grains and it only would make him worse.

Fast your dog for 24 hours BEFORE you start feeding raw. Look at coaches link! Very important I understand the nutritional benefits before switching.

SMH! Read what COACH posted. This is why EDUCATING yourself on the proper way to feed raw is paramount BEFORE doing anything.

@ coach thanks because that seems to be the simplest breakdown of PMR that I have read. I know that the ratio of meat/bone/organs is important and I think that's where further research comes into play.

Well thanks to all who responded my puppy bruno is doing a lot better. Fed him boiled chicken and rice and the diarrhea has stopped. I read that site you guys posted, ill follow that. It also wasn't my lack of research it was i guess to much research of the wrong ingredients. I spent about 2 weeks looking all kinds of raw diets up. But i do appreciate the responses and corrections bc this pup means a lot to me and i want him to grow healthy. Btw my vet sucks you may have heard of them VCA animal healthcare or clinic. They're overpriced and push for surgeries, sales, vaccines that have already been given and yea so the vet was a last resort.

He is a cute pup! Looks like he is going to be big! And yeah....I don't like most vets... That is why if I use one, I use a hollistic one who is about an hour away lol!

Glad the runs stopped but stop with the rice now because more than likely he will end up being allergic to grains like many blue dogs seem to be and he will start loosing fur and itching... :p

Keep us posted!

The blue buffalo kibble has issues right now BUT HAS NOT been recalled yet. I was just reading this on another forum yesterday.... I'm glad you now have him on real food... Would listen to all the others and get rid of the rice.

Find a country vet... I just got shots, check up, ear infection screening and meds for $30. Same price as the rabies certificate in my area so $60 all together..

Are you kidding me? I LOVE VCA and have nothing but great things to say about them. Over priced? Are you nuts? If anything they are very REASONABLY priced

But they are all different I guess. They have many locations. I love mine
