well we have close friends who 1 owns a training center and the other 1 is a
k9 officer/ retired military police in the k9 corps. so we kind of trained for little to nothing.everyone knows Max around the k9 unit ect. As not every pitbull is cut out for sch.But i think classes are like $50 and ppl would meet once again. but again your dog must have a solid obdience commands on and off leash before you even think about this sport. its not for everyone. You just cant train your dog and be done with.I to this day even tho max is retired will work with him twice a week.

go to that leerburg forum on the other thread and there is a section where you can find someone in your area. A club is the best way to go and way cheaper than lessons

Hello,
If you can find a good schutzhund club to train with, that would be wonderful. A club offers so much more than an individual trainer, such as mentoring and different training strategies. However, if you are trying to get into a club, and own a pit bull...good luck. Most schutzhund clubs are leary about taking in new members, especially ones with bull breeds.
Here are some tips for getting a Schutzhund club to allow you to train with them, with a bull breed.
1. You should have already had some obedience training on your pup, perhaps even have an obedience title with another registry (U-CD or UKC FO).
2. The first few times you meet with the club, don't even ask them to "work" your dog. Watch, listen, and learn. Keep your mouth shut. Do not talk about how your dog is the baddest, toughest dog or breed.
3. Go alone or with your family, not a group of friends.
4. Read everything you can about Schutzhund, but don't sit and talk about how much you know, wait for them to ask you.
5. Make sure your dog has good manners around people and other dogs. Do not bring a dog aggressive dog to a training club, and think they are going to allow it.
6. Don't waste the clubs time. Make sure your dog has some prey/play drive, and stable nerves before you even decide to work it. If your dog is not interested in a ball or tug work with you, it is not going to play on a strange field with all the distractions.
7. Although a club is best, a pit bull owner may have to pay a trainer for awhile, to get a dog to the point where a club feels they are worth their time. Again, pick a trainer that has titled a dog in the sport you are interested in(not just a SchHB), and has worked non-herding breeds before.
8. Also, keep in mind that although obedience is a plus, don't use all compulsion style obedience, or you could hurt a dog for schutzhund. A dog should start obedience with a motivation, and reward methods. Later on when a dog knows the commands some force may be used.

Again, these are some suggestions to keep in mind. I have been doing schutzhund for a very long time, and have belonged to several SchH clubs, so I see both points of view, the clubs and the wantabee member.

Lots of good info. I think that with starting out with any training you should shut up and listen.

Shadyridge,
Wow! Congrats. I just read your post about having a schutzhund 2 titled dog "max". Impressive, especially with a gamebred dog. What club did you earn your titles with?

Great post! It is very important how you approach the club. Even our club is leary of APBT's coming in. That's why I was saying do not bring up home protection because they may not work with you. PP training and sport training are different.
