A SCHUTZHUND THREAD!!!!!!!!
YAY!
been trynna work my pup.
been home teaching obedience,
so far knows zitz, platz, ouss, hup onto the couch and car, been trynna teach it blipe (still dunno how to saay that LOL) but knows stay. knows come but not hier, i mite have taught my pup packen a lil early to grab his toy but i hardly ever use that and i have taught him ouss even more than packen,
well i've been using german words too like brawfer hoond, zo ists brawf, i like the idea of talkin to your dog in a totally diff language. but anyways trynna teach my dog to heel like follow alongside you. i know must be taught with leash, any tips tricks would help and any other commands that i might wanna teach my pup (he's actually 8 months now) and we've never had any formal schutzhund training but i plan to when i have more free weekends, well thx for takin the time to read!

I teach my dogs packen when they are itty bitty. I use many command as young pups, it gets them use to it right away. the best thing to do is find a Sch club near you that you can train with. You also need to start tracking and you can do that with a young pup now. I will have to post something on heeling in the next few days.

Thx! im lookin forward to that heeling thread when you're done, and i agree i need to teach him tracking. I have read about scent pads or something like that, is there something else i can do to get him to start tracking? or an alternative on how to get him to "start/begin" tracking?

Schutzhund is a German protection sport. It has 3 phases, Protection (bitework on a sleeve) Tracking, and Obedience. I will look for a few websites that can give you more info.

i have to admit. i have never heard of schutzhund before i got on this post. and i think that i wouldnt have if i could read the word. haha. but im glad that i did check it out. this is great, and i think that my dog would like the obedience that it takes to become part of this club. he definatly has the drive and the desire to learn and become more of a "dog" but to become part of the family. Is there any opinions out there on where or how to start? Red already knows come, watch, stay, sit, find... he knows his name but doesnt always react to it. im interested in gettin Big Red into this sport, yet i know absolutly nothing about it... Im hoping to find people that are willing to help me out when needed.

also should i train to protect after he has mastered all of the other qualities? or imtermingle them all at once. i dont want to confuse him and make him think its alright to bite at anytime... i want to to be on command.

make sure when you find a sch club they are APBT friendly as many are not, also make sure the club and other people that advise you have at least a sch 3 and some real experience, best of luck to you!!!

Schutzhund is a great sport and takes dedication. Competition obedience is different than your regular pet obedience I suggest you find a good club around you and start going to a few training sessions. Then if you think you are still interested ask about joining.
Personal protection is not the same as Schutzhund sport so please do not try any protection by yourself, get involve in a club or a trainer. The younger you can start a dog the better and you will not be really doing bite work but obedience, tracking, and preparing to do bite work with a pup. Even the way you play with your puppy could have positive or negative effects on the sport. Make sure if your interested you start with the dog while they are young and get involved with a club. If you have a few clubs in your area make sure to try them all out and also ask if they have worked an APBT before. I have a club 5 mins from my house but I drive 1 hour to the next town because they are better for me and my breed.
Here is a link to help you get started.
