Did you start low and go progressively higher? He might not know any other way to jump it. That is my answer and what comes to mind when I see these problems in agility.

There are other things I have seen used but I myself had not had to use.
If you are using an adjustable jump put it to the height that he first starts having problems on. Then you can do a few things, you can balance two boards flat in an x pattern on the jump. They will be unstable so the slightest touch will bring them crashing down. This makes the dog not want them to fall so they learn to pick up their feet.
I would not do that with a dog who might freak out and not go near the jump afterwords. But if you dog is happy go lucky it might work. I have also seen carpet tack strips attached to the top of the jump. Another alternative is those plastics mats used in offices for chairs to roll on, they have really hard plastic bumps on the back and you could use a strip of that and put it on the top of the jump. That way if he touches it, it is uncomfortable.

In agility again we see dogs touching the bars or jumps because they have not been taught properly to jump, so maybe just back chaining with a lower height and slowly going up might help. My meter jump increases by 6" and that works well for that.
JMO I know Howard may have better ideas.

Good points Performance. Here are some other suggestions. I would get some 1 inch boards, and slowly increase the height. Start with the height, where he already clears it, without touching and then go from there. Another thing to try, is a bungie across the top, that can help teach the dogs not to push off, or touch. Also putting a shorter jump 6 inches in front of the meter jump. It helps them take off at a better angle and clear the jump easier. Also, make sure he is warmed up good before jumping, but not too tired. Also, until you get the jump down, don't perform it with the retrieve, as you do not want to cause any other issues. If all else fails, I can also help you, if you want to come up and use a hot bar.

Also, unless you plan on competing at real high levels, i would not worry about a slight touching on the jump. If you do plan on going for the 3, which i hope you do, then yeas you for sure, want him clearing the jump.

Good post Howard, I also have heard about putting tape on the top like the bungee idea, the stickiness (is that a word? lol_) of it bothers some dogs.

Oh! I almost forgot I have been putting x-pens on both sides of my jump so my dog can NEVER go around the sides to come back to me. She learned real quick the right way and only way to get to me is to jump back. That's my tip for the day! lmao
