My first schutzhund experience today!!!

About a month or so ago a gentlemen came in to where I work and he had a shirt on that said schutzund something. I asked him about it and come to find out he does schutzund training, he use to train dogs for police stations and he imports GSD from Germany and sends them around the U.S. Oh he also breeds GSD. After talking to him for awhile he tells me there is a small group of people that get together every Sunday at his house and they work their dogs on schutzund and I should check it out. Today was the day. There were only four people two of which drive 2.5 hrs one way every Sunday to go here (it's only 5 minutes from my house). He has beautiful dogs that listen very well even the pups. I'm new to this sport and just testing the waters to see if this is something I would like to do, but it looks like a lot of fun. My family is concerned it will teach my dog to bite and make her mean and unstable. Today he was telling me that he has also trained alot of pitbulls in schutzund back when he lived in Florida, but he was saying how difficult they were to train in this sport because many of them did not want to bite a human (or a human wearing the sleeve)and I found it kind of humorous because so many think pits are viciuos man eaters.

That's great you found someone to train with it. I have never had problems with adult APBT's and bitting the sleeve as it is a slow progression from a flirt pole to a sleeve and to start they are just in prey drive and has nothing to do with biting people. I have seen any breed at an older age that had a hard time since most people teach the dogs it is not nice to bark or get excited like that around people. It is best started when they are young but some adults can ease into it. Let us know how it goes!

PK as you said its a step from the flirt to the sleeve and thats what I try to tell my gf. They were not doing anything I dont already do with my girl on the flirt pole except using the sleeve instead of her squirrel. She has that drive and when she hits the squirrel on the flirt she its it hard and fast, so I think she would take to the sleeve fast. I know we will have to do better with her every day obedience, but this might actually help. I did not take her since this was the first time I had been there and the first words out of his mouth were "Where's your dog?" ME:I didnt know if I should bring her. Him:It's a dog club, bring your dog. Real nice laid back guy with alot of control on his dogs.

ok who is this person your training with ?
im from sturgis and the club i train with is in elkhart indiana. Ouc club has no ABPT prejudice .Our coordinator is Ronnie Weiss and he has had no trouble with Brock. There are a few good people around you that know APBT. If your truly interested in Schutzhund , i would contact either Ronnie or Howard Burgess.
No one in this area knows APBT and Schutzhund like Howard.
