Barca has been doing agility for the last 3 weeks and I wanted to share what it is like to train an APBT from the ground up in Agility. He has super high drive like his mother (Siren) and he is DA and has a on of prey drive. These are the main things you have to watch for when training an APBT. DA and prey drive if not taken care of early will make it impossible to run off leash in agility.

I took Barca to my Advanced class I was teaching last night and had him watch all the dogs run. As soon as his prey drive came in and he got excited I corrected him pretty harshly but necessary. I told him no and pretty much alpha rolled him, he was shocked but respectful of the correction. It took 2 corrections and a few pops on the prong collar and his he stopped trying to look at the other dogs and watched me. I feed him treats when he kept his focus on me and praised him.
After class I took him off leash and did a few jumps and worked on his tunnel sends. He is doing great I can send him over a jump and get 25 feet of distance to a tunnel. Building obstacle independence is how to teach agility correctly from the beginning. I do not want to have to run close to the jumps so my dog can find them, i want the dog to find the jumps on their own and I will post a video of how to do this. I also want to be able to send my dog to a tunnel and not have to point the tunnel out. Contacts are also really important I train from the beginning for the dog to know what they have to do on the contact and to stay at the end till released. Barca already is starting to understand what to do on the contacts and is working on finding the jumps.

Things I need to work on and is a must for agility is a good recall and a good stay. His is stay is ok but we are working on that, but I need to work on his recall. He got the zoomies and I had a hard time getting the little butt head back ;) That is why I wanted to work him when no other dogs were on the field. I will keep this thread updated.

I forgot about this thread!! Barca is doing great in agility and I will see if I can get video of him running next week. He has gone through agility prep class and Beginning 1 and is now starting Beginning 2. He is doing really great and reminds me of his mother, such a dork! He is running off leash and doing well, he can do about 6-10 obstacles.

He is not really DA in the sense where I worry about him going after other dogs. I do worry about other dogs going after him because they will not come out of the fight ok. I always have my break stick and make sure any of the problem dogs are not off leash when he is. We do have some DA dogs in my class and I just have to make sure they are not running when I run him. He is pretty awesome unless you go after him first then he is all bulldog.

thats ideal! thats perfection in progress :pup: Since you got him back I've been like ((drooling)) .. LOL if hes that phenom.. I know one of those bitches is 2wice or three times the dog he his; generally how it works IMO.

Males of any species are expendable and replacable.. the Female is the house for beggining of life(thus NOT expendable)

anyway.. Im lovin the videos of that ZorroXSiren offspring ... My feet are better after shooting myself last year or so.. :p thats stuff is all fire and I love the look of contained fire in the eyes of a couple of those gyps off that breeding.. :clap:

If you ever have an accident and barca gets free and knots up with a sister..
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:(jokes)

If you do stud him do to a neice or half sister through zorro.. REALLY!! what ya'll need to do seriously ! Barca X (zorros sister) Aunt to Nephew breedings are the VERY BEST.. if that happens seriously CALL ME. :D not anyone can handle that kinda fire. Its the only kinda dog worth having IMO.. Well done.

Thanks, yeah I am not sure where I will take Barca or Varro too. My only problem with going outside my yard is I really want UKC registration so I can compete in Obed and none of Zorro's offspring are UKC I think. I got Zorro's UKC paperwork just before they closed registration for that reason. {sigh} well see though maybe I will have to take him back to a sister ;)

I know this is an old post, but was looking through the agility section as I just started my girl. I've made the mistake in the past of just teaching obstacles and winging it from there. Actually been doing a lot of 1 jump exercises. I appreciated seeing your video andand knowing I'm doing some exercises right: D
