Hi All,

I have a Dilemma.. Sasha sleeps in my room, in her bed usually or sometimes mine. Problem is when someone comes in late night, she will bark and bark until they pop in the room or I let her out to check it out. It's an alert bark as heckles rise while she's barking but as soon as she see's someone it's happy tail time.

So, I LIKE the fact that she hears someone entering and is letting me know(side story one day I hid for a while while she barked, she doesn't come to the front, instead stands her ground for farther away)..

The issue is I need to sleep so I've been considering starting to make her sleep outside of my room, that way she see's people right away and doesn't bark as long...

What I really want is to have her keep sleeping or be quite. I've tough about keeping treats in my night stand and when she barks I show her one and give it to her when she stays quite, what do you all think about this approach?

I'm sure if it was a burglar they'd walk right back out when they heard this bark

You can use that method to teach her a "Quiet" command. If she stops barking when she sees the treat, tell her "Quiet" in a calm, firm voice, and give her the treat if she maintains the silence for a few seconds (3-4 seconds tops). Over time, lengthen the amount of silence you ask from her; if she ever starts barking before the time is up, put the treat away and the next time you do the exercise, shorten the time again.

My question is--do you want her to stop barking and growling completely, or would you be happy with growling that gradually goes away? When my boy alert-barks, he will bark a couple times, I'll tell him to shush, and then he'll start growling low, almost under his breath, lol. That's fine for me cause I can usually sleep through it and he eventually shuts up when he realizes he's not going to be able to see whatever set him off, but that may not work for you depending on how light a sleeper you are.

Kane's usually the dog that will alert-bark like a freakin' Mastiff and rush the door with his tail and butt wagging to see who it is, lol. Doesn't matter if it's the middle of the night. I usually wake up to him launching off my bed.

I'd like the barking to stop when I tell her too, usually it's during the weekend my brother and room mate get in late so I can deal with that.
