Metro Council members have postponed action on a tough new dog ordinance for East Baton Rouge Parish after it fell short of passing by just two votes.

In its original form, the ordinance aimed at pit bulls, but it was later changed to target any breed of dog that attacks humans or animals.

Under the modified law, owners of dangerous dogs would have been required to insert microchips in their pets, carry at least $100,000 of insurance on them, and confine them in a house, a locked fenced yard, or kennel.

Which is how it should be. I read a while back in 225 magazine about some official in BR stating that it would be wrong to ban a dog for their breed, instead of banning them for being vicious. I was very impressed...

I'm glad that this didn't pass though, as I plan on moving back to Baton Rouge within the next couple of years.
