City enforces pit bull ordinance, two animals put down
Associated Press
ROSEDALE, Miss. - Two pit bulls that were taken into custody under the county's pit bull ordinance have been euthanized, officials said.

The dogs were found penned on Rosedale city property. Rosedale is one of many cities to recently enact laws aimed at protecting people from potentially dangerous dogs.

Rosedale Police Chief Isaac Morris said the dogs were taken by the Bolivar County Sheriff's Department Animal Control Officer Jerry Hopson.

"He took them into custody because the owners didn't follow the guidelines for pit bulls and, in addition, they were on city property," said Morris.

Captain Mike McCain of the Cleveland Police Department, who is serving as interim director of the animal shelter, said that the dogs were put to sleep.

"When the animal control officer from the county brought them in, he said that the owners were not getting the animals back because they had not complied with the county's pit bull ordinance," said McCain.

According to rules governing the Cleveland-Bolivar County Animal Shelter, all stray animals brought into the shelter have a five day period to be claimed by their owners before being placed for adoption or euthanized.

Euthanization would occur if the animal was sick or aggressive and not suitable for adoption.

The Bolivar County Pit Bull Ordinance, under which the dogs were taken into custody, does not specify what happens to pit bulls once they are in custody. No section of the ordinance mentions the fate of the dogs.

It does not say that dogs are immediately euthanized because owners are not in compliance with the ordinance. It also does not say that owners are given an opportunity to comply with the ordinance and get their dogs back after they are found in violation.
