I'd like to ask you responsible pit bull owners how I could protect myself from unleashed pit bulls at the beach. I've been carrying pepper spray for other aggressive dogs, but have never had to use it, and not sure how well it would work on pit bulls? Last week I encountered two and yelled at them to leash their dog, but don't like yelling at people and they just shot me the bird. In the past pit bulls also charged up to me with so much intensity that its very intimidating. So should I just pepper spray one when it charge up to me, or should I wait for it to start biting at me? Of course there are a lot of responsible dog owners but just as many irresponsible that just don't care if their dog is aggressive to strangers at public beach. I'd like to cary my phone also but sometimes jogging so hard to carry so much stuff. I do carry a pocket knife just in case. I really don't want to spray a dog but aggressive dogs got so bad I have to do something. If this is the wrong place to ask please just delete. Thanks if you can offer some advice.

Edit: forgot to mention that there is a leash law.

I carry a golf club to fend off unleashed dogs when I'm walking mine (on leash). Normally, a loud, booming, "NO" will bring those dogs to a halt and catch the human's attention, if that doesn't work, golf clubs are hard and have the advantage of giving you some reach.

The pepper spray should work for a pit bull the same way it works for any other dog. They really are just dogs underneath all the hype. And no, I don't tolerate any dog charging at me. If they're charging me, that's enough of a threat to get me yelling and making myself look as big and menacing as I can. There is an effective range for the pepper spray, though - it should say on the can.

Can I also say on behalf of all responsible dog owners that those particular dog owners are horrible? I hate that they are making you feel uncomfortable about enjoying a public beach. I hate that they are making you feel like you need to come up with defense strategies. I hate what they are doing for the image of large dogs everywhere. None of this would be necessary if they just clipped on that 6' leash and kept their dogs under control.

Hey Jen, that does help a lot! I'm glad I posted here. I admire your attitude to cary a golf club to keep other dogs away from yours. Also appreciate your assessment of other dogs being aggressive if they charge up to me. Yes, it does bother me that I have to think up these defense strategies, because getting out at the beach has been the highlight of my day. I guess you see the same kind of dog owners all the time.

One of my friends has a really nice little female pit that I really liked, however recently have had some bad experiences with pits. My next door neighbor already has one nuisance dog, and about a month ago an american bulldog I had never seen before growled at me in front of my house while going to my car, so told them I'd call animal control next time and the daughters boy friend hasn't brought it over again to run wild with the other nuisance dog.

I'm done trying to educate people about the risk of a dog like that, because they assume I hate dogs and think I'm spreading misinformation. I posted my opinion based on my experiences and now just want to protect myself. The most frightening encounter I've had is with a huge Cain Curso that attacked me and my dog at a camp ground some 18 years ago. So really nothing would surprise me anymore.

Thaks again! I do appreciate you feeling badly for me being subjected to threatening dogs when I'm out walking in a public place. I'm really considerate but so many people aren't. Most people don't get out and its all political to them. Cheers!
