Savannah pit bull attacks spark response
Posted: July 13, 2011

By Jan Skutch AND ERIC CURL

Savannah is becoming a community divided.

On one side are those who hate pit bulls.

On the other, those who love them.

Both sides have come forward in the wake of last month's pit bull attack on 7-year-old Javon Roberson, a rising first-grader at Shuman Elementary School. Javon is recovering from facial wounds suffered when two pit bulls, who had escaped through and open car door, attacked him and other children playing in Treat Park. One dog was euthanized and the other was returned to its owner.

Opponents of pit bulls are calling for stricter rules for them, and supporters are asking for understanding.

A local womens' support group has taken to the streets in search of signatures to force action by the Savannah City Council to prevent a repeat of the June 21 pit bull attack on Javon.

Cheryl LaBon, founder and CEO of Women of Wisdom, said her group wants to gather 1,000 signatures by Friday on a "Justice for Javon Petition" to require pit bull owners to keep their dogs in 8-by-12 foot pens in yards in neighborhoods where children
15 and younger live.

Those petitions will be presented to Savannah officials on Monday, she said. City officials previously have said they are reviewing local dog ordinances.

LaBon's group plans to have petitions at:

• Today: Kroger on Mall Boulevard
• Thursday: T.J. Maxx/Marshalls in the Savannah Center off Eisenhower Drive
• Friday: Oglethorpe Mall
Hours for each day will be 10 a.m.-noon and 5-7 p.m.

LaBon urges anyone who wants to help to call her at 912-631-2689.

'Sweet and gentle'

Responding to community attention to pit bulls, the Humane Society of Greater Savannah hosted an educational event on Tuesday.
Karen Higgins, a Humane Society volunteer, said she was scared of pit bulls before she started working with them three years ago.

"Before I volunteered I was fearful, but once I started working with them I found them to be sweet and gentle animals," she said.
Eloise Miller has owned two pit bulls, and never had any negative experiences.

"They loved to play with children," she said. "They run, jump in the swimming pool with them. If I got another one, it would be a pit.

"They are the most loving, devoted dogs you will ever have."

Jim Cordero has owned pit bulls for 20 years and currently has three.

He thinks the problems are stemming from the wrong owners getting ahold of them and training them for the wrong purposes.
"They would do anything for their owners," he said.

Rather than create new laws like the city is considering and Women of Wisdsom is promoting, he would rather see existing laws - such as leash laws - more strictly enforced.

"A dog without a leash is like a car without brakes," he said.

Whaaaaaa??? Are they saying they want Pit Bulls to be strictly kept in pens? What about those that are indoor dogs?
I really hope the idiocy stops, because if this spreads, I'm moving to Florida again.

MT, this is why we have to fight the laws, I will keep up with this, so you can fight it the best way you know how, and I am not sure about the dogs in the house. Let me see what else I can find out.

THey may or may not, tell them you are planning on moving there and your opinion does matter. It can never hurt to try. ;)

True, worst case i could drive there for a meeting and start off by saying i drove 3 and a half hours from another state because i'll be moving to Savannah. That would show dedication. May not mean anything to them but if they have a heart they might be more likely to listen.
