Help with diet during and after parasite.

So we got our pup through a rescue from a.foster home. After 1 week of having her we switched and started her on Orijen Amazing Grain Large puppy blend. After the first vet visit we were told she had mild Coccidia and had to give her Albon (think that how it spelled) for 11 days and then retest a week later. Retest was clear

2 weeks after When the Orijen large puppy bag ran out we bought the regular puppy amazing grain since it was on sale. Same ingredients just kibble size is smaller. One morning she blew up in her crate liquid poop everywhere!!! Horror show! Back to vet another poop sample she had parasite again. This time they gave us a pill methosomething (forget name) have to give her that for 7 days.

During that 7 days vet said give her only chicken and white rice. Take her off the kibble and said Orijen is not good, too much protein for her give her Purina Pro plan instead. (I know vets on push those 3 iams, science and Purina).

So 7 days on chicken and rice and the meds her poop got better. Day 8 I started to introduce Orijen again mixed in with some of the chicken and rice. I'd do 3/4 cu pcicken.and rice 1/4 cup kibble. her poop got soft again and then moved to 1/2 / 1/2 same thing soft poop very mushy. Today is day 12 since the 2nd parasite diagnosis and full kibble only today. Her 3rd poop today was pretty much liquid.

So, I'm at a loss. She was doing just fine on the Orijen Amazing Grains large puppy blend but now I am not sure if the Orijen Amazing Grain regular Puppy blend is causing her issues or if maybe she just still has a parasite issue (having her poop retested tomorrow). I am going back to just chicken and rice tomorrow to be on the safe side but if it is the food causing soft mushy poop, should I listen to the vet and go with Pro plan? Should I go back to large puppy Orijen or try something like Taste of the Wild? This has been frustrating 2-3 weeks for me. Any advice is appreciated.

For reference. She is 4mo old, 28lbs and I feed her 2 1/4 cup of Orijen Amazing Grain puppy divided into 3 feedings a day.

I'd try a small bag of the other Orijen since she's had that before.
If she still has issues, try TOTW, Blue Buffalo Wilderness or Arcana. Start with small bags that you can either return if it doesn't work or donate to a rescue.
Anything Purina should be a last option. They make Beniful and call it good. They make Dog Chow and say no fillers. Not an honest company.

Also, any change in food brand or type needs to be introduced very gradual. Start by mixing just a small amount with their usual food and increase the new food slowly till the dogs digestive system gets a chance to get use to it.

The funny thing is if you look at the ingredients of the large puppy vs just puppy it looks exactly same. I'm sure it isn't but I didn't think it would cause this much issue. Right now it been 12-15 days. Cage was on just chicken and rice for 7-8 days then I was mix the kibble with the chicken and rice and then just kibble and now back to a mix of chicken and rice and kibble.

Her poop is still soft so I'm thinking I need to try a new brand and see how that works. Sucks cause I have a full bag of the Orijen sealed down stairs cause I bought 2 bags when it was on sale 😔
Can you return it? If not, maybe take a small loss and sell on Craigslist.

While I will agree with slow transition, I'll also say I don't do it. For the dogs on kibble (I'd rather not feed kibble, but a couple of them have other ideas) I regularly switch it up.
Obviously if a dog is having issues, not the way to go.

Please keep us posted and send pics.
Add a probiotic and some pumpkin to help solidify things.

If going grain free, watch for excessive use of peas, legumes and potatoes.

It's important to note that individual dogs may have different dietary needs and sensitivities, so consulting with your veterinarian would be the best course of action. They can provide specific guidance tailored to your puppy's health condition and requirements.

Given your puppy's recent health issues, it's possible that the change in food or the presence of parasites may have contributed to the soft and liquid stool. It's good that you're getting her poop retested to rule out any lingering parasite issues.

If you're considering switching your puppy's food, it's generally recommended to do so gradually over a period of about a week. This means mixing the new food with the old food, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food over time. This can help your puppy's digestive system adjust more easily to the new diet.

So wanted to update this.

Since this time she had another bout of a parasite and she had a bacterial rash on her stomach and I guess what the doctor was calling hots spots

Everytime I go to a vet they ask about what I feed her and always want me to change to pro plan. Same BS about Orijen protein too high etc .

I get compliments everywhere about how lean and healthy and good looking she is and her poop has been fine except times when she grabs some stuff she should eat like sticks bark or the occasional captain crunch the kids dropped and she hawked!

I still feed her Orijen Puppy but I am going to try and switch to TOTW Salmon it is about $40 less a bag and I'd get the same amount of feeds out of that vs the Orijen so it a big money saver and looks to have a good ingredient list for the $.

This is the day we got her in January at about 10 weeks old

This is her now at 5 mo old

Thanks for the update BigStylez. Fingers crossed that the TOTW Salmon agrees with her and the food issue can be settled.
