After today's vet visit, my 5 month old Sammi has demodectic mange, and hookworms. She will be starting a three day treatment of powdered panacur with a second treatment in early July. The mange will require three treatments at $75 each.

Although the vet said she's around the right weight, she still looks skinny to me at 21 pounds. She started out on purina puppy chow and has recently been switched to iams smart puppy for large dogs. I also bought two 5 pound bags of bil-jac to help with weight gain. Is there anything else I can do help her improve? My poor baby looks miserable.

Performance kennels aka Lisa can probably give you great advice on the mange but I would switch your pup off the large breed Iams because for one, pit bulls aren't a large breed dog they are medium and two, iams isn't good food. I would get her on taste of the wild or something grain free. I would also give her a skin and coat supplement like salmon oil or flax seed oil added to her food. However treating the worms and mange is the important thing for now but by putting her on a better quality food once the mange is treated will be very beneficial to her :) also she definitely doesn't look under weight by the look of the picture and I don't think she needs to gain any. The biljac is also crappy food. I wouldn't even bother with that. I would just bring it back if you have the receipt ;)

This website explains why the added oils in a dogs diet are so important for skin and coat. It's a good read :)
