The initial alert for Sterling Heights was posted on June 2010. After months of debate, the Sterling Heights City Council put off any action on the proposed pit bull ordinance until February as they felt additional information was needed before taking a vote.

The proposed ordinance is the first item on this Tuesday's council agenda:

ORDINANCE INTRODUCTION

1. To consider introduction of a proposed ordinance to amend Chapters 1, 2, and 8 of the City Code to implement new regulations governing dogs within the City. (Presentation - City Manager and City Attorney)

Under the proposed ordinance, pit bull owners would be required to have an identification microchip implanted in the dog's ear and gain $250,000 in liability insurance. Violators could face civil infractions and fines of up to $500 for the first offense, $750 for the second, and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.

Please take a moment to send another round of POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the Sterling Heights officials listed below.

The council meeting is Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers (40555 Utica Road), Sterling Heights, Michigan. Please attend if at all possible.

Is it bad if I don't have a problem with this? :(
Yes it is.

ALL dogs should be microchipped (and not in the dogs EAR! OMG those things are the size of rice! talk about causing pain!), and then registered with the city. dogs who are deemed dangerous are the only ones that really should have insurance on them. Do you know how many family members that will be "bitten" to get that insurance money? There are people that are willing to go there and lie about it.

As for the fines, yes they are a great idea FOR ALL DOG BREED! Not for Pit Bulls only.

That is why BSL SUCKS. It targets only one fake breed of dog. The most dangerous dog I have encountered was a Black Lab. It was known for killing dogs and biting kids (had bitten 3 kids when he jumped their 3ft fence). Why isn't this dangerous dog under this law?

THIS is why these laws are NOT OK! I shouldn't have to fork out an extra $100 a month to have insurance on my dog when my dog is of no harm to anyone, yet the guy with the golden up the street doesn't have to keep insurance on his dog who has bitten in the past!
