NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA) --Pit bull owners in the city of New Albany face significantly higher fines if they fail to follow new guidelines set by the city.

A new law on the books as of June first requires owners of registered Pit Bulls to enclose their dog in a chain link fence with a concrete floor.

City officials estimate there are between 68 and 70 registered Pit Bulls in the city limits.

The recently banned the registration of any new Pit Bulls.

"You will have an opportunity to have your Pit Bull dismissed and to leave the city of New Albany, but there's always been an ordinance here. It's just never been enforced. We're going to be out enforcing this in the near future," New Albany Animal Control Officer Jim Taylor said.

If an owner is found to have an unregistered Pit Bull, they will not be able to keep the animal in the city.

Those with registered Pit Bulls that do not follow the new law face 250 dollars for the first offense and 500 dollars for the second offense as well as possible jail time
