GREENVLLE, Miss. (AP) - Greenville pit bull owners will need to start keeping their pets on a shorter leash.

The Delta Democrat Times reports that the city council has approved some changes to previous
ordinances to toughen rules on how a pit bull is confined, the distance one can be walked around certain areas, registration of pit bulls, fines and impoundment fees.

Council members say they aren't banning pit bulls but want the regulations followed.

Among other things, the council voted to increase from 50 feet to 150 feet the distance from a school, playground or park that a pit bull can legally be walked.

Fines were also increased for violating the ordnance - $250 for a first offense, $500 for a second and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.
