My new pup is .......a babby!!!

1722 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mike06train
I (we) have had 5 APBT and some other dogs thru the years. This new pup is happy, fun great with the kids.....but a big baby.
Dose not like being alone. Not seperation anxiety, but not real happy about it. He HAS to sit on your lap, folows me around like a shadow. In short he's like a little kid.
Like I said he's alot of fun and non of this bothers me but, it would be nice if when he gets older, I can be comfortable that he would be protective of my family. I've had other dogs that acted this wayand it's cute and funny. But, non of the pits we have had were this way. They were all nice but even at 3 months they acted like they knew they were the sh*t. I think Rocky came out thinking he was the man.
We all love Lou. He's only now 14 weeks old and is loveable as hell. But, It would be nice if he just manned up a little bit.....not too much though.

he's still a puppy... Give him time :)
If you're looking for a dog who is going to protect your family, you might want to look for something other than an APBT. What your pup is showing is typical APBT personality, they are very loveable and affectionate to humans. Human aggression is a serious fault in this breed, so if you want your APBT to be a guard dog, it's most likely not going to happen. He might be protective, but not aggressive, that's just not how the breed naturally is. Basically if someone were to ever threaten you or your family, it's not likely that he will be aggressive toward anyone, it's just not in their blood. My boy is protective, such as barking when someone knocks on the door, but as soon as I let the person inside he's all wiggles. lol.
Pitbulls are just not naturally aggressive towards humans, in all the history of the dogmen who bred pitbulls back when dogfighting was popular, they were always bred to be dog aggressive, but never human aggressive, because they couldn't have a dog being aggressive to a human while fighting them. So human aggression has long been bred out of the pitbull, and any pitbull that is aggressive towards humans is a serious flaw and a huge risk to anyone, especially a family.
I hope that helped a little, your boy is just doing what he's naturally meant to do. :)

Great posting Kodiak girl. Mike06train, I think it is just a good sign your puppy is bonded and loves you all! Which in turn will mean that he would protect his family if he ever needed too. And I think any good dog would, no matter what breed.

No I'm not looking for a gaurd dog. And Lou is just about perfect. It's more of an attitude thing. For example, Rocky and Jackson were happy and friendly but if a stranger came near one of our kids they always put them selves near the child right away. They would not get agressive, just ready. This pup seems more aloof. He's a great dog i'm just wondering if it's something he'll out grow. If not it's no big deal.
i think he just luvs ya a bunch and he figures let the big dogs look after the serious stuff when he gets a lil older and mature he ll come into his own ,it may be the best dog youll ever have. enjoy yur pup and give him a lil hug for me tty later.
Thanks. I am enjoying this little guy. He gose to work with me every day and runs around the office. Everyone is enjoying him. The family got lucky finding such a nice dog at the spca.

like i stated before, any dog can become human aggressive without proper socialization, training and supervision. they may have not been bred into the dogs but it can happen. i was guilty of spreading false facts like that also a few years back until i did some research. can't help it though when i read it in books and see it said over and over again in specialized forums. then i read stuff about old school dogmen....some from actual dogmen, and just throws a new spin to everything i thought was true. lol. dogmen just cared for one thing, and that was winning. here's a few FYIs. the last link about Colby really surprised me

My pup loves all humans I don't ever want him getting iffy or ready around anyone. Bulldogs are supposed to show love and human affection with all people in general. Anyone can walk up to my dogs and they get greeted with loving licks and I have 2 kids. This is the way these dogs were bred to be. A dog who is skittish and drawn back or unsure of itself or it's surroundings is usually a fearful dog or showing dominance over it's territory. A confident dog will always remain sure of itself at all times in any given situation they don't feel threatened by new people or new situations. Your pup doesn't need to man up he's a puppy he will mature over time as he grows so will his personality. These are not guard dogs as someone already stated. If you want a dog that's going to protect your family there are other breeds out there for that very purpose. Now is a very important time for this pup to be socialized in as many situations around as many different people as possible. So don't limit your pup.... socialization from a young age is key to raising a stable confident dog in the long run. The only thing these dogs should show any signs of aggression towards is other animals because it's in their nature they were bred to fight other dogs so the instinct will always be there and should be controlled by a responsible handler through training and preventative measures. Good luck to you and your new pup.

Dog men were not saints by any means and yes they wanted to win that was the object of the game but they weren't stupid either they didn't want to get killed by their own dogs they had to be able to lay hands on them in and out of the box... with the exception of a few known man bitters historically within this breed dog men did not keep man biter's alive they were culled that was the general rule was it broken by some Yes (selfish and stupid)!!! but it was not general practice either to breed and raise man biters FACT. Some of these websites your referencing are spewing propaganda and hatred for this breed. They don't support the breed in any shape or form you have to know your references because you could very well be agreeing/siding with and being mislead by the enemy in disguise many of these big organizations like peta and the hsus claim to love this breed and do more damage than good they are out to destroy this breed and want to see them gone for good. Ray fox is actually a credible source the other 2 I wouldn't take anything written worth a grain of salt. No one knows these dogs better than the dog men who created them. Dogbite.org is run by Colleen Lynn who let's just say hates this breed nothing on that site is truthful. Some dogs are just not wired properly in the head it's up to the owner to cull those dogs ASAP! Human aggressive APBT's should be laid to rest no matter what! It goes against this breeds genetic makeup. And I don't know of any good dog woman or dog man breeding or showing these dogs today that would keep a man biter alive. Ain't gonna happen.

I must not be using the right words because no one seems to be getting the gist of what I am talking about here. Thanks for the input though. He is an awsome pup and myself and my girls will enjoy his company for many years. Infact, he's sleeping on my office chair behind me as we speek.

your dog is still a pup and you won't know how it'll turn out until it starts to mature and it's balls drop. other than that, they're just like babies, enjoy them while they're young.
Just gotta build confidence. Some dogs are naturally more confident than others. Just make sure you continue to socialize with as many ppl, places, things - all while on leash of course & in non hazordous environments like training programs with a reputable trainer (ie dog parks can be considered hazordous because other dogs are off leash, etc.). This will help build your puppy's confidence.

Also have you tried crate training for when you leave or need personal time? Make sure you incorporate it as a desirable & comfortable place for the dog. Giving specific special treats for when the dog goes in the crate, a frozen peanut butter filled kong works great ;). Also be sure to use a plastic crate due to safety & not a wire one. Also make sure the crate is in an area where the dog isn't visable to unrulely neighbor kids (personal experience). ;) Good luck!

yes in today's day and age manbiters are probably culled but back then not really. i'm just saying, like any other breed i would think HA isn't a natural trait or breed requirement. regardless of breed, proper training, socializing and supervision is a must. for an example, even though not naturally aggressive towards humans, an apbt raised and exposed only to it's owners may become fearful and/or aggressive towards strangers if it wasn't properly socialized. the rottweiler and german shepherd went through what the apbt because of irresponsible or ignorant owners. you know how it is with good news, people quickly forget or don't want to hear it, but when there's bad news, that's all they can talk about and remember.
I can only name a handful of man bitter's that were bred and kept alive back then. I am telling you that a dog man has to be able to touch his dog in the box. I don't know how much you know about the sport itself. But the handler has physical contact with the dog before and even during a match. When the dogs are broken up the handler must be able to go in the dogs mouth with a break stick without getting his you know what tore up. I know very well who those old man bitter's were and it was completely selfish and foolish for those dogs to be kept alive but that was not standard protocol. There are way too many good dogs to count that performed back then that were NOT HA. So were there some? Yes but if you don't think dog men of the past culled HA bulldogs your wrong.
I'm NOT into the dog fight thing but I do know some about them and I have been to one and it made me sick. But, the reason you could not have a human agressive dog (in a real dog fight with true dog men) is because at the start of the fight, you would trade dogs and wash the rival dog then switch back and get to the fight. This would garuntee that nothing was put on the fur, like poison or a chemical. Ifthe dog was HA, it would bite the other handler.
