Talk about scary!

This is my first puppy ever I have had him since 4 weeks he's now about 10 weeks old. He had a very active day and the last hour of his playing he was running wild, almost extra active than normal which is crazy because he is already a ball of energy. It was around the time when he usually naps that I noticed he was sluggish, and seemed dazed/lethargic. I was worried he might have eating or drank something bad, or that perhaps he was just super sleepy from all the excitement.

Anyway I took him to the animal hospital and turns out his sugar had dropped. I was under the impression to feed him at this age only twice per day which is what I had been doing. The vet said that his sugar dropped and I need to have food around him at all times. I feel like a terrible owner, but im glad it wasn't something more serious, or that his sugar didn't drop lower and really damage him.

Does anyone have similar experiences with a young pup they've had? Any suggestions diet wise so that this never happens again? It was pretty damn scary, i've grown so close to Jack over this past month. It's amazing how quick they grow he was only 3 pounds a couple weeks ago now 10.

Here's a pic from yesterday of him being a handful :)

Forgot to mention I am feeding him Blue Buffalo

When they are that small we just let them eat what they want to.. i mean like dont pack 10lbs in two days or anything but let them snack when they want ;) ive never had a dog's blood sugar drop... good thing you took him to the vet!

Yup we have dealt with this in small breeds before, { very common in smaller breeds} alot of times they outgrow this , but a good idea to feed young pups 2-3x a day if you want to scheduled feedings, if it is an only dog you can do free feeding. My dads small breed suffers with this and has never grown out of it. They keep animal crackers { like the arrowroot ones for kids} on hand and if they notice him start to get lethargic they give him one { he is 5lbs though so 1 is enough} , but anything sweeter will help snap him out fast.
They do have to watch him though as he can die from this if left untreated once he gets to this sluggish state , very much like diabete's. Is he home alone often? if he is you may want to look into doggy day care atleast for a bit while he is young, hopefully he will outgrow this and be fine.
What we saw with our dogs was excitement and hard playing would bring on these symptoms and not usually right away , if we had a long day usually in the evening we would have to watch them .

If you talk to most small breed breeders poms, pappillons , pekenese ect alot of them have dealt with this and majority of the time its just while they are young pups.

So is this generally an uncommon problem in pitbull puppies? I'm thinking he might have just over exerted himself and this caused some of the problem. He hadn't eaten in i'd say about 5 hours and played most of that time and didn't really sleep.

How much should he be sleeping per day? I'm thinking he's pretty unrested, he goes to sleep for 30 minutes - hour then runs bonkers for an hour or two before napping again. He seems to really only want to sleep when he's around me otherwise he's kind of unsettled if that makes sense.

I'd say during a 24 hour period he's probably up about half the time and that seems like a little much to me

the activity to me sounds normal puppy behaviour, they play hard then konk out for an half hour or hour then back up again. As for if this is a common issue with this breed im not entirely sure I havent heard of this much in larger dogs , just the purse size dogs. I would just spread the feedings out to 2-3 x a day even if smaller feedings just to keep a level sugar level in him .

So now im having another problem. The puppy doesn't seem to want to eat his food. he was eating blue buffalo puppy food and he would typically just dive on into his bowl and eat everything up fast. Since his incident two days ago he's been kind of reluctant to eat it, yesterday i was able to get him to eat some by puttin some on the floor and feeding out of my hand ,but it still wasn't much and he didn't seem to really want to eat it. I got him some can food since he ate it all up at the vet's the night I took him, yesterday he ate a bunch of the canned food and seemed to like it (then had diarrhea after) he ate a couple treats later that night too.

Now this morning I tried giving him his regular dog food and he didn't want it, so i gave him some can food and he's only eaten one of the pieces of meat. What should I do to get him to eat again? he usually loves to eat, he seems hungry though as he keeps going to the fridge when I go to open it...

Well I'm reluctant to tell you to switch foods or keep adding stuff but it seems like your pup needs to eat for health reasons. Can you grab some plain white rice cook it and mix that in and see how it goes? Or you could alway try some canned pumpkin purée not for pies JUST pumpkin. The pumpkin is good for their belly's. Welcome by the way. Glad you were able to bring you pup in when you did.
