I have a pitt bull who seems to have something going on within his backside. It seems every few minutes, he feels something bothering him to the point where he has started scooting. The Vet did a thorough exam and said it was possibly fleas, but the dog didn’t have fleas. What can this be? I gave him a deworming medication, but – no worms. Any suggestions?

EckoMac’s advice is spot on. When the dog starts doing the “butt scoot boogie” the anal glands are not emptying and need to be expressed. If this is something that you are not comfortable doing bring the dog to a vet. I would suggest using a different vet than the one who suggested that it might be fleas. I wouldn’t have too much faith in that one.

If the dogs stools are loose, you might want to consider a change in diet. Usually, when the stool is firm the glands express themselves.
