I can`t get my 14 week old brindle male, Nino, to go on a walk.
If I Put the collar on him and he FREAKS out and screams like some one is killing him. He will wear the harness though. I put the harness on and take him out front, he stands there stiff and wont move, period.

I`ve tried taking him with the other two dogs, he wont budge.
I`ve tried using treats to coax him, he wont have anything to do with moving.
I have tried taking him out in the front yard to hang out and get comfortable for hours, nothing, he is like a statue. This has been going on since I started taking them for walks out 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you tried skipping one of his meals before a walk so he will be more interested in treats? You may have to use a high value treat. Something really yummy that smells super good that he loves but does not get all the time. Some dogs like toys better Have you tried to lure him with one of his favorite toys? Like a ball or rope?

No haven`t tried walking him before a meal. I will try this with some more enticing treats, maybe the Bil-Jac chicken livers.
I`ve tried his favorite ropes, his rope ball, even tried his bones with no luck.

I think he`s a little off as well, he`s a bit slower to learn than the other two.

i had a dog that did this some yrs ago-leave leash n collar on in the house make him walk around with it on-dont budge he will have to learn sooner or later, leave collar on ALL the time.it could take hrs before he realizes the leash n collar is a good thing.

Poor baby! I can't imagine why this collar/leash combo is so traumatic for the little fella. Does he like to go for rides and explore new territory? If so, maybe you could drive him to new places and take him out on leash to explore. The new scents and sights might just distract him enough so he doesn't even notice the leash but at the same time gets used to it.

My moms lab was like that but she had been abused. The neighbor kids where she was living tied a rope around her neck and drugged her behind the four wheeler.

We put the collar on her and then we would just leave her alone. We would pet her and love her up when we walked past her and told her what a good girl she was. Then once that was under control we put the leash on in the house an did the same thing. It took about a week for her to realize that we were not going to hurt her. We let her set the pace as it was hard on her she would shake uncontrollably if she thought she was going to be hurt.

I agree with putting the leash on in the house, around the yard and just letting him go. Make sure you treat him when putting the leash on. Take baby steps, don't go to fast and let him ease into it.

It is a bit late to be thinking about this, not sure when you started but this should have been started very early. I have a small pup that hated, just fricking hated the leash at first. I have been working on her in the above way an she has come along pretty damn good. Still not where I want her but she is way better than before. Lucy is 3 1/2 months now. I actually just too k her on her first real walk yesterday.

I use a treat for her that she loves. When i walk her I ask her to "let's go" than walk and treat when walking with a loose leash, when she pulls I stop and say "no" till she stops, you dont have to say anything though just stop when the leash is loose again treat and praise. If they start to pull stop and turn around and go the other way. When he follows again treat and praise. DO NOT get frustrated, even though it may be hard take your time and it will come. But remember baby steps don't rush it or you can loose all your progress and even put yourself back a good amount.

Hope this helps it has, helped me.:)

They don`t frustrate me, Bear was hesitant to walk and so was Harlow at first. They`re only 14 weeks old, I have been walking Harlow & Bear and trying to get Nino to walk for the last 2 weeks. I couldn`t get Bear to cross the street until today, she wouldn`t leave the sidewalk, she would pace the curb and whine and act like the street was lava, lol. It took about an hour but now she`s non hesitant to cross, when asked.

Harlow wasn`t hard to walk at all, he didn`t walk the first time I took him out to walk but the second day he was right there with me. He walks so well. He stays at my side, heels on command, he sits down at every corner and waits for the "cross" command before he crosses the street. He is not distracted by other animals, including the couple neighborhood non-puppy-fearing cats. He doesnt even look at other dogs, his attention is on me.

Bear is close to the same level, she heels, walks beside me, shes a bit distracted by cars and people moving around her but she`s getting more comfortable by the day. As I said she accomplished crossing the street today. She would literally shake and cry and not leave the side walk.

I think Nino is a little off, he takes a lot more time to learn anything and not because he`s reluctant but because he just freezes up and looks so anxious like he doesnt know what to do. Is there a specialist that I can have see him to find out if he is a bit off?
At least if I know that he is slow I can better understand how to train him to better benefit him. Patients has been the key so far but his progress is really slow compared to the other two and the other dogs I`ve trained.

Are you working them alltogether or seperate. It sounds like Nino is a reactive dog and they are harder to train. I think it wuld be best if you could find a nice quite place to work him get him use to one thing at a time. The collar then the leash then walking with the leash dragging behind him. He is going to be a challege but how rewarding when he finally gets it.

I work with them one on one and once they understand the command I work with them all together.

I`ll try letting him run around with the leash on in the house, it`s a bit harder having two others who will think its a toy. I`ll have to get Daddy to take the other two out on like a walk and keep him here with that leash on him to get used to it.
I`m going to try with the good treats today too, see if I cant get him to move lol.
Todays going to be a busy day lol, we get to work on the "stay" command for when the door is opening. Lol

Ok so I just finished spending the last 45 out front with the frozen pupsickle with no luck. I tried the chicken livers and he looked like he desperately wanted them but he did not budge. So I sat down beside him and started talking to him and petting him and after a few mins he stopped staring in to oblivion, looked at me, wagged his tail and sat down. This is his first real movement since I started him.
So after he did that I gave him a little praise and threw his rope toy. It took a few tries but HE RAN AFTER IT!! :D (We`re still working on the bring it back part, he does it half way). Been able to walk him up and down the block ever since.
He honesty seems so unbelievably happy to be on the walks with the other two now. Idk it was like he snapped out of whatever trance he was stuck in. We`ll see how he does when we go on our evening walk. Three`s a handful! But we`re getting there. :D

He still makes a scene when the leash is attached to his collar, so we are still working on that, but he is good with the harness and leash combo.

I did not read the rest of the posts so if someone already said this sorry..
have him wear the collar first for a few days around the house. If he tries to take if off or scream just ignore him. He will learn it is nothing to fear if you let him work it out. After he is comfortable with that for a few days then get a thin 4-5 foot nylon leash and let him drag that around the house. You can cut the handle off so he does not get snagged on anything and only put it on him when you are around to watch. Let him get use to that for a few days. The pick up the leash and follow him around and let him pull on it if he will. This will help him get over what ever fear he has of the leash. If you still have problems after about a week of this then post another thread and pm that you posted it. Puppies can be little stinkers sometimes!! ;)

my pup is still kinda like this? hes 14 weeks and hell walk fine without a leash no problems, when i put on the leash hes hesitant and it takes forever to get him to walk but eventually and very grudgingly he does. the weird thing is he only does it when were by our front door, ill open the door and hell walk out but then freeze as soon as i shut the door, hell sit and not budge, ill even drop the leash and stand a ways away and call him and offer his favorite treat and hell come to where i am for the treat and as soon as i try walking again hell go sit by the door. i take off the leash and hell follow right by my side without even offering him treats and stops whenever i stop and sits on command and stays, his collar always stays on and help do ok inside the house on the leash it just seems to be outside that's the issue? and if i pick him up with the leash on and set him down at the end of the drive hell walk ok with the leash! its only by the door he won't move? i can't figure out what the issue is? any help greatly appreciated!!
