COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Some area residents claimed that pit bulls have been terrorizing their neighborhood, and they said it's just a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

Homeowners on the city's north side said they don't feel comfortable walking in their neighborhood, NBC 4's Barbra Flannigan reported.

Brad Rife said some pit bulls in his neighborhood near Commodore Street are running wild.

"The kids up the street let this black and white pit bull loose and it ran up to our fence near our dogs," Rife said.

Rife called police and the dog warden. That's when, he said, he learned that a neighbor had been chased on top of his car; and a neighborhood dog was allegedly mauled by a pit bull.

Jay Gammon lives down the street with his pit bull, Cinnamon. But Gammon insists that his dog wasn't involved in the incidents.

"If you treat your dog with love, it's going to grow up being nice. But if you train it to be a fighter and mean, I mean, what else can you expect?" Gammon said.

NBC 4 contacted Franklin County Animal Control, who said an officer happened to be in the area. The officer first examined Cinnamon.

"There was no lock on the gate. It was acting aggressive. It was barking and acting like it wanted to get to us," dog warden Cpl. Joe Rock said.

According to authorities, the dog was removed for not having a license or a secure living area.

Rock also visited two American bulldogs. The owner was given five days to get licenses, but his pets were properly confined.

Cinnamon and her owner could be reunited, but officials said only under strict conditions.

"He'll be cited for the violations, and he'll have to appear in court, and the judge will have to decide what the penalty will be for that," Rock said.

Rock also advised the pit bull owners about making sure their dogs have leashes.
