I adopted a 5 month old apbt pup last Sunday from the humane society and on Monday she ate 3 cups of proplan (the food she was on at the shelter) that day, and then gradually lowered her intake to 2 cups a day and yesterday she only ate about 1.5 cups of the proplan. I also took her to the vet yesterday and she got a few shots and she’s a healthy pup weighing 19.8 pounds.

Maybe it’s the shots that made her not as hungry? But if she continues to eat less than 2-3 cups a day what can I do to help her eat all the food? She’s a lazy pup but has a few spurts of energy throughout the day and I take her out for a walk 3-4 times a day for 15-30 minutes and man... sometimes she’s doesnt even want to leave the apartment let alone go down the 3 flights of stairs but she can go back up them just fine. (I carry her down the stairs) 🙄

Anything will help guys! Thanks so much!

As dogs mature they don't eat as much. I wouldn't worry unless she quits eating all together.. some obedience training and common sense will help break her not willing to walk. You carrying her is the worst thing you can do... she's running you and it'll bite you in the ass in the long run. Put you foot down establish dominance and get training her.

First thing I would do would be to change her food. You're feeding her the equivalent of McDonalds. Check out www.dogfoodadvisor.com for options. Many feed Taste of the Wild which is a decent quality and price kibble. Make sure when you switch, you do it gradually to reduce the chances of diarrhea. You can add a tablespoon of pumpkin (real pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling) to her feed to reduce the likelihood of diarrhea and firm her up some if she is loose.

Also three cups of food is too much anyway. Especially for a relatively inactive pup. My two year old 50lbs mutts only eat 2 cups a day and they are very active. My older girl at 70lbs eats 2.5 cups a day. I think you will find changing her to a higher quality food will improve her energy level. Follow the feeding recommendations on the bag but make sure you understand that the feeding guidelines are total amount of food for the day. At 5 mos twice a day feedings should be good so if the feeding guidelines are 2 cups per day feed her 1 cup twice a day. If she really is a low key, relatively inactive dog then err towards to lower side of the guidelines to keep her from getting fat.

Also following the recommendations made by BD. You definitely want to stop carrying her and start training her. You need to establish that you're in charge and she will follow your lead. She's young and should be easy to train/fall in line quickly.

According to the feeding guidelines on the bag of TOTW Salmon Puppy Formula for Zeus's age and weight it says I should be feeding him 3 2/3 - 5 cups per day which seems like a lot but it's really not for a puppy. They should be eating more, especially if they're active. The kibble is really tiny. He gets 1.5 cups x 3 times a day = 4.5 cups per day.

I agree with the previous poster, if your pup is not as active feed on the lower end of the guidelines and work your way up. The more active they are, is the more hungry they should seem/be.

i know this sounds like a commercial, but our puppy stopped eating all of her proplan. but when she went to play at her friends house, she at her friend's food. which was purina dog chow. so we tried that and she eats it. we buy our food at a place where they allow you to mix multiple foods together so you can experiment to see what your puppy likes.
