So i took cairo for a walk and when i got home, noticed he had a few little red spots around his genitals. ( no fleas or ticks) AND, he's medicated with frontline... BUT TODAY, while we were out, i noticed his inner thigh was red, and had a bit of dried blood looking stuff on it, so when we got home i cleaned it and put antibacterial cream on it, but here is a pic of it... should i be worried, am I freaking out, or do i have to take him to the vet???? I really cant afford to if i dont have to but i wanted to see what you guys thought, and no, it doesnt look like its bothering him. (no changes in personality, eating or energy, at least, not yet god forbid, but he is sleeping a lot because he went on an all day hike yesterday....)

what should i do and what does this look like?

he has the ointment all over it which is why it looks blotchy, its more red in color could be maybe a heat rash?? please tell me something good, im going crazy being worried!

Looks like a bacterial infection.

It could be a contact allergy or a staff infection. It would not hurt to treat t as a contact allergy till you get to the vet and see if that helps. Here is how you treat a contact allergy. http://www.gopitbull.com/health-nutrition/36474-tempests-allergy-diary.html

You can treat a staff infection at home and save a trip to the vet, it does not look that bad to wait a few days to see if you can treat it yourself. You can get some Cephalexin without a prescription and treat the infection at home. I do not think it is something I would run to the vet for but I do not get excited for skin issues or minor things, most can be treated at home.

Actually guys, a lady in my block who i ran into (who used to work as a vet tech) said to save my money because it was either a staff infection (as PK said) or a hot spot, nothing serious, she told me Sulfodene would be good to get?? And also gave me ANIMAX??? I will definitely get cephalexin tomorrow, and see what happens over the course of a couple days. Sounds like a safe plan...

Sulfodene is basically the same as nustock I believe, they are both sulfur based. That is is fine but IMO less is more I would let it air out, it is such a large area ointments will make a mess unless you really need them.

ANIMAX is anti fungal and again I do not think you need it at this point just more money for something you might not need.

I would bathe the dog with dawn dish soap in case of a contact allergy and give benadryl twice a day with the right dosage (see the thread I posted). Then I would do Cephalexin for 10 days for the secondary skin infection that is kind of developing. If you want you can use a triple antibiotic ointment it the area is dry and chapped but nothing fancy. If it does not look better after a few days of the meds then you have to start eliminating other possibilities.

All the vet is going to do is charge you for looking at it and prescribe some ointment that may or may not work. If you want you can send me 40 bucks and call it even
