I have seen so many posts on numerous forums asking how can I help my dog, or such and such happened what can I do? There are times where asking online is fine but there are times where we cant offer you anything and you need to get to a vet. One of my biggest peeves is hearing people not taking there dog to the vet when they need it cause they cant afford it, YOU took the dog on its your responsibility. And #1 rule if they are going to get sick or hurt it wont be in a convenient time, So make sure you have plans made ahead of time. { things like extra savings just for vet bills, insurance , or agreements worked out with a vet where you know they will treat and work out payment plans}. For some who seem to have trouble identifying when its one of those times where an "emergency trip" Is needed I thought this may help you.

Dog illness symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Many symptoms may mean illness but not an acute emergency. But other symptoms such as loss of consciousness, seizures, difficulty breathing, high or low temperature, as well as several others can be an indication that your dog needs emergency veterinary assistance. If you notice any of the following signs or think you may be observing them, seek veterinary assistance immediately.

. L1oss of Consciousness

A change in consciousness can manifest as sudden collapse, tremors, staggering, sudden withdrawal or lack of responsiveness, coma, convulsions or sudden blindness. A dog may also exhibit a chronic tilting of the head or biting at imaginary objects.

2. Seizures

You can identify a seizure in several ways. The dog's entire body will likely shake or tremor for several seconds. Then the dog will be unresponsive for a few seconds or up to a minute. You may see the whites of the eyes.

3. Difficulty Breathing

If a dog is struggling to breathe, you may notice him gasping for breath or breathing in a labored manner. You might also notice noisy respiration, and the dog's tongue may become blue. It may also appear swollen.

4. Change in Temperature

A dog's temperature should be around 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If his temperature goes below 99 or above 104 degrees, something is seriously wrong. You need to take the dog's temperature if you see him panting, if he feels very cold or if he seems really lethargic.

I recommend everyone who owns a dog has a thermometer just for the dog, make sure you pick up covers and vaseline as well. Should always have this on hand when you own dogs

5. Bleeding

If you cannot stop blood from any area of the dog's body, apply pressure with a clean piece of fabric and go to the emergency vet. Uncontrolled bleeding can cause loss of consciousness and death.

6. Signs of Acute Pain

If a dog won't stop whining or yelping, he's trying to tell you something is wrong. If the usual problem solvers don't work, seek veterinary attention.

especially with this breed, they dont often show pain even when they are in alot. If your dog is showing pain there is something that needs to be checked out. If its a limp You can do crate rest but if it continues more then a couple days its time to go get it checked.

7. Extreme Energy Changes

If a dog becomes extremely lethargic all of a sudden, it's a sign of a possible serious and systemic problem. Extreme lethargy manifests as a dog who won't come out of his crate or won't move a muscle when called or enticed with food or a favorite toy.

8. Symptoms that Do Not Alleviate

The following symptoms should not last for more than 2 to 3 days. These include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, poor appetite, constipation, wheezing, or dully, dry and flaky hair and skin. Lameness, weakness, and major changes in urination are also symptoms that should change in a few days.

9. Abdominal Bloating

A bloated or abnormally distended abdomen is an acutely serious issue. If your dog seems to be having abdominal pain (i.e. winces or whimpers when touched there), but he isn't vomiting, this is a sign of potential poisoning or an acute kidney problem.

10. Other Times to Call the Vet Immediately

.
After any accident, fall, or dog fight, a vet should check for trauma, injury, or shock. If you suspect that a dog has ingested poison or any sharp object, don't wait for symptoms to appear. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Alot of the times its common sense and you can use your own judgement. Just remember when you ask online you dont have control over who answers you and what experience they may or may not have. If its something serious get a vets opinion and although there may be vets online they cant put there hands on your dog and 1 symptom can have 100 different outcomes.

actually Great post Angel!!! I agree huge pet peeve is people who say they don't have money for a vet right now. I understand that money can get tight, but most vets will also understand if you explain the situation and work something out. People don't usually try because they don't want to have to pay the expenses ever, not just right now. Don;t own a dog if you don't want to pay to care for it!

LOL right? you would think it would be more common then it is.
We could add so much more to this thread from ish we have seen on the boards lol.
Things like that post " a pup is stuck in the birth canal and we cant get it out , what can we do", " my dog is pooping blood for a few days now what can i do to fix it?" , or " my dogs fur is falling out and its scabbed and smelling , how can i fix this? " lol.
If you cant afford a vet bill dont get a dog lol, I will guarantee at some point in that dogs like there will be a vet trip you didnt plan on.

LMAO! You two are crazy! Okay, my turn for sarcasm.....

My dog just got hit by a car and her tail got ripped off. Can I use crazy glue to put it back on? Or do I really need to take her to the vet :flush: I also have some blue/grey duct tape that matches her fur so would that be an option as well? Please let me know ASAP because I think she is bleeding internally so time is of the essence :hammer:
