Last night we were just watching tv like normal and the dogs had some bones. I always set them up so their not too close to each other to avoid any sort of fight, they have always been fine no aggression. But the cat walked by and started sniffing his blanket and he turned around and showed her his teeth. It kinda freeked me out cause he's never acted that way before. I said Marley be nice to your kitty and he dropped the bone and laid down and didn't pay attention to her anymore. Is he being aggressive or is he just grouchy cause he's getting pretty old? Was that the right way to correct him? Do you think that it will become worse? I really need some input on this one does any one know why he is acting like this now when he never cared before?
Just like people dogs get older and grumpier... IMO ya know? LOL Just territorial; enjoying his bone didn't want to be bothered.. But you were right to correct it, I like to use the AT sound.. LOL my kids and my dogs sit and look at me now that I think of it every time I use it...
Sounds like grumpy old men syndrome to me. But if he stands corrected that's a good sign. If I were you I'd just keep a good eye on it & the next time he did something like that I'd take away the bone the very second, pet kitty & him together then introduce the bone again while the cat & you are near him & see how he reacts.
Sounds like a little bit of resource guarding. Nothing to be really worried about imo. Just keep an eye on him when he has something he likes and other animals are around.
My boss's old man (her rottie/shep mix, i call him old man cuz hes old lol) doesn't like to be bothered while chewing on his bones. if someone else is chewing a bone he will run towards them, they run away cuz he is the top old man, and then he calmly picks up the bone, walks back to his corner and drops it doesn't even chew it. he just has to have things his way, lmao. i wouldn't worry too much, unless like dosia wandered over to see marley's bone and they got into a fight, then that would obviously be a problem. just guarding his bone and telling the kitty not to steal it
IMO
You should never have food items around APBT's and other animals. That is how I keep peace in my house and it is not worth a dog fight or your cat getting hurt. He did what was natural for him and that was to guard his bone. I think you were right for correcting him but in the future I would not put him in that situation.
